Component Analysis - LD50/LC50
The components of this material have been reviewed in various sources and the following selected endpoints are published:
ALUMINUM CHLORIDE, ANHYDROUS (7446-70-0)
Oral LD50 Rat 380 mg/kg
Component Carcinogenicity
None of this product's components are listed by ACGIH, IARC, NTP, DFG or OSHA
Medical Conditions Aggravated by Exposure
eye disorders, respiratory disorders, skin disorders and allergies,
Excessive aluminum exposure has been implicated in degeneration of the brain, softening of the bones and elevated serum calcium levels.
Inhalation - Acute Exposure
ALUMINUM CHLORIDE: The hexahydrate form is irritating to mucous membranes The anhydrous forms corrosive hydrochloric acid on contact with moisture Inhalation of corrosive substances may cause symptoms of respiratory tract irritation possibly including coughing, choking, pain in the nose, mouth and throat and burns of the mucous membranes If sufficient quantities are inhaled, pulmonary edema may develop, often with a latent period of 5-72 hours The symptoms may include tightness in the chest, dyspnea, frothy sputum, cyanosis, and dizziness Physical findings may include weak, rapid pulse, hypotension, hemoconcentration and moist rales.
Inhalation - Chronic Exposure
ALUMINUM CHLORIDE Depending on the concentration and duration of exposure, repeated or prolonged exposure to corrosive substances may cause inflammatory and ulcerative changes in the mouth, dental decay and possibly bronchial and gastrointestinal disturbances.
Skin Contact - Acute Exposure
ALUMINUM CHLORIDE: Direct contact with the hexahydrate form may cause irritation and the anhydrous, especially on moist skin, may cause severe irritation, pain, and possibly burns Aluminum salts are suspected of being sensitizers, however allergic sensitivity is exceedingly rare.
Skin Contact - Chronic Exposure
ALUMINUM CHLORIDE Depending on the concentration and duration of exposure, repeated or prolonged contact may result in irritation, dermatitis, scarring and sweat gland necrosis.
Eye Contact - Acute Exposure
ALUMINUM CHLORIDE: When the hexahydrate was tested by applying 100 mg of crystals to the cornea of rabbits, immediate blepharospasm occurred When the crystals were allowed to remain until washed away by tears, they caused transient epithelial damage, and a persistent faint nebula in the corneal stroma The anhydrous form may cause redness, pain, blurred vision, and corneal burns which generally heal within 2 days.
Eye Contact - Chronic Exposure
ALUMINUM CHLORIDE: Effects depend on concentration and duration of exposure Repeated or prolonged contact with corrosive substances may result in conjunctivitis or effects as in acute exposure.
Ingestion - Acute Exposure
ALUMINUM CHLORIDE: Corrosive metal salts may cause a burning pain in the mouth and throat and severe burns of the mucous membranes There may be discoloration of the tissues Swallowing and speech may be difficult at first and then almost impossible Vomiting, watery or bloody diarrhea, tenesmus, hemolysis, hematuria, kidney damage, anuria, liver damage with jaundice, hypotension, collapse, and convulsions may also occur In animals, lethargy, anorexia and death occurred after oral dosing.
Ingestion - Chronic Exposure
ALUMINUM CHLORIDE: Depending on the concentration, repeated ingestion of corrosive substances may cause effects as with acute ingestion Long-term feeding of rats with aluminum chloride at 100 to 200 mg/kg retarded growth and disturbed phosphate and carbohydrate metabolism Reproductive effects have been reported in animals.
