Extinguishing Media
alcohol-resistant foam, carbon dioxide, regular dry chemical, water
Large fires: Use alcohol-resistant foam or flood with fine water spray.
Fire Fighting Measures
Move container from fire area if it can be done without risk. Dike for later disposal. Do not scatter spilled material with high-pressure water streams. Cool containers with water spray until well after the fire is out. Stay away from the ends of tanks. Withdraw immediately in case of rising sound from venting safety device or any discoloration of tanks due to fire. For tank, rail car or tank truck, evacuation radius: 800 meters (1/2 mile). Do not attempt to extinguish fire unless flow of material can be stopped first. Flood with fine water spray. Do not scatter spilled material with high-pressure water streams. Cool containers with water spray until well after the fire is out. Apply water from a protected location or from a safe distance. Avoid inhalation of material or combustion by-products. Stay upwind and keep out of low areas.
* * * Section 6 - ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES * * *
Water Release
Subject to California Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986 (Proposition 65). Keep out of water supplies and sewers.
Occupational spill/release
Avoid heat, flames, sparks and other sources of ignition. Do not touch spilled material. Stop leak if possible without personal risk. Reduce vapors with water spray. Small spills: Absorb with sand or other non-combustible material. Collect spilled material in appropriate container for disposal. Large spills: Dike for later disposal. Remove sources of ignition. Keep unnecessary people away, isolate hazard area and deny entry. Notify Local Emergency Planning Committee and State Emergency Response Commission for release greater than or equal to RQ (U.S. SARA Section 304). If release occurs in the U.S. and is reportable under CERCLA Section 103, notify the National Response Center at (800)424-8802 (USA) or (202)426-2675 (USA).

Hydrazine has been tested in mice by oral administration, producing liver and mammary tumors and lung tumors in both P and F1 generations; after intraperitoneal administration to mice, it produced lung tumors, leukemias, and sarcomas After oral administration to rats, it produced lung and liver tumors When tested by inhalation, it produced benign and malignant nasal tumors in rats, benign nasal polyps, a few colon tumors and thyroid adenomas in hamsters, and a slight increase in the incidence of lung adenomas in mice.
Medical Conditions Aggravated by Exposure
respiratory disorders, skin disorders and allergies,
Additional Data
Alcohol may enhance the toxic effects.
Inhalation - Acute Exposure
HYDRAZINE: The vapor may cause severe irritation of the respiratory tract with sore throat, coughing, shortness of breath, and delayed pulmonary edema Other symptoms may include hyperexcitability, tremors, dizziness, nausea, and coma Low doses may cause central nervous system depression High doses may cause convulsions, respiratory arrest, and death Red blood cell hemolysis, anemia, damage to the lungs, liver, and kidneys, and fatty changes of the heart muscle have also been reported In animals, restlessness or lethargy, anorexia, vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, and cardiovascular collapse have occurred Animals that survive for 1-2 days frequently develop hypoglycemia, liver necrosis, and/or renal failure.
Inhalation - Chronic Exposure
HYDRAZINE: Industrial exposure to the hydrate once a week for 6 months caused lethargy, tremors, fever, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pains, black feces, incoherence, enlarged liver and kidneys, intestinal hemorrhage, and liver tenderness and necrosis There was fluid in the chest cavity, pulmonary edema, and bronchitis Bilirubin and creatinine levels were elevated and hematuria and proteinuria were reported Death occurred 20 days after the last exposure Autopsy revealed severe tracheitis, lungs filled with exudate, enlarged kidneys with severe tubular necrosis, interstitial hemorrhages and inflammation, liver damage with microscopic focal areas of necrosis and granular cytoplasmic degeneration, and an enlarged heart with muscle fiber degeneration and hyperemia Animal studies reported decreased appetite, weight loss, easy fatigability, weakness, depressed erythrocyte counts, hematocrit values, and hemoglobin concentration, anemia, and reversible lung, liver, and kidney damage Reproductive effects have been reported in animals Nasal tumors, mostly benign, have occurred in rats and hamsters There are reports of pulmonary adenomas in mice, thyroid adenocarcinomas in rats, and benign adenomas of the thyroid in hamsters.
Skin Contact - Acute Exposure
HYDRAZINE: The vapor may cause irritation, redness, pain, itching, and swelling Contact with the liquid may cause penetrating burns Sensitization dermatitis may occur in previously exposed individuals Absorption may occur through intact skin and may cause effects similar to those in acute inhalation Reproductive effects have been reported in animals.
Skin Contact - Chronic Exposure
HYDRAZINE: Repeated or prolonged contact may cause an erythematous blistering or eczematous dermatitis Absorption through the skin may cause effects as detailed in chronic inhalation Repeated exposure may cause sensitization As evaluated by RTECS, administration of the monohydrate to mice by skin application resulted in a statistically significant increase in the incidence of carcinogenic tumors of the lungs.
Eye Contact - Acute Exposure
HYDRAZINE: Low vapor concentrations may cause delayed irritation with blurred vision, burning, itching, swelling, and lacrimation Severe exposure may cause temporary blindness lasting up to 24 hours Direct application of the liquid may cause severe burns and permanent corneal lesions.
Eye Contact - Chronic Exposure
HYDRAZINE Repeated and prolonged contact may cause itching, burning, and conjunctivitis.
Ingestion - Acute Exposure
HYDRAZINE: May cause severe irritation with throat, esophageal, and visceral damage Absorption may cause effects as in acute inhalation Accidental ingestion of between a mouthful and a cupful produced immediate vomiting and unconsciousness The victim was flushed but afebrile and had dilated, but light reactive pupils After treatment he exhibited sporadic violence and the pupils diverged to the right; his memory and voluntary movements were normal, but ataxia, inability to write or sense vibration, and lateral nystagmus to the right were present.
Ingestion - Chronic Exposure
HYDRAZINE: Guinea pigs administered 0.07 mg/kg/day in drinking water showed allergic effects, body chemistry changes, and disturbances in liver functions Fatty degeneration of the liver and kidney degeneration have occurred in animals Reproductive effects have been reported in animals Lung and liver tumors have occurred in rats, and lung, liver, and mammary tumors have been reported in mice.
